Where to buy sandbags?

If you need sandbags for flood defence or traffic management, look no further than Weir Bags, long-term suppliers of heavy-duty sandbags to local councils, businesses, the Environment Agency and the military. Made from polypropylene or environmentally friendly hessian with rot-proof options, they are supplied filled or empty according to your requirements.

How do sandbags work to stop flooding?

Sandbags prevent or reduce flood water damage by forming a barrier which resists the rising water and diverts it around instead of through buildings. They should be loosely filled so they are flexible enough to fit tightly together. Sandbags won't guarantee a water-tight seal but are extremely effective and will also filter out muddy sediments.

Are sandbags reusable?

Hessian sandbags can be reused if they have only come into contact with rainwater but if they have been exposed to floodwater, they are likely to have been contaminated by impurities. However, polypropylene sandbags will not be affected by soil bacteria, do not degrade when wet, are resistant to tearing and can be easily reused.

How many sandbags do I need?

For effective protection, sandbags should be stacked two or three deep. To protect a standard doorway from 20cm of water takes at least six 15kg sandbags. To build a wall of sandbags you should allow one bag for every 30cm of length, three for every 30cm of height and three for every 30cm of width.

How to use sandbags to prevent flooding?

If possible put down plastic sheeting first then lay the sandbags lengthways, parallel to the flow of water, flattening each row with your foot to eliminate gaps, create a seal and strengthen the structure. Bags should overlap as if you were laying bricks. Make sure you cover any drains and brickwork vents to prevent backflow.
