Company History

Weir & Carmichael starting trading in 1955, when Clifford Williams bought a business from the Carmichael family. The firm had been supplying hessian and jute sacks for wheat and animal feed and Clifford, who had strong links with the mills selling jute and twill bags built on this to establish a stronger business supplying hessian sacks to businesses in and around Liverpool. Over the next 20 years the business expanded to include a wide range of packaging sacks and bags.

Today we supply over 1000 businesses throughout the UK; everything from agriculture to zoology. We still supply large numbers of hessian sacks to the rice milling industry and to businesses trading in Christmas Santa sacks. Our main product line is woven polypropylene sacks, selling around 12 million per annum, making us one of the largest suppliers in the UK.

The business is now owned by Martin Ellioth, but still has a strong family focus as Martin’s father-in-law is John Williams who retired as Managing Director just under a decade ago.  During our time in business we’ve survived a number of recessions and even a major fire in 1978 that completely destroyed our original premises. After the fire we moved to premises in Pall Mall Liverpool where we stayed for over 30 years. Since 2010 we have been based at larger premises in Bootle where we have expanded our operations considerably.

What We Do

The core business of supplying sacks and bags to the manufacturing sector is still a key part of the business, but we have broadened our product portfolio and expanded into the waste and recycling sector supplying a range of kerbside recycling bags and sacks to local councils and waste management companies throughout the UK. We have also developed a range of award winning protective packaging products marketed under the Britwrap brand. These are sold across the world and have proved popular in North America, Australia and Europe as well as the UK.

Our Products

Our packaging products are designed for robust industrial and commercial applications. Although we are known primarily for printed woven polypropylene, printed hessian and waste management products, as our business grows and expands so does our product range. We now specialise in the following - custom FIBC bulk bags, sandbags, protective covers, net bags and secure shredding products. We are also able to source products outside of our current range and have provided many customers with bespoke custom made packaging applications. As a company, we believe packaging should be bought for a purpose and not used wastefully.
